I want them to warm up to quality writing, which is difficult for these students because several do what is expected to receive a passing grade, nothing more. Each time a student sits down to write, I want them to reach their personal best. Whether it is using more details, better grammar, or discovering an idea that they have never explored, these steps build a better writer.
This process is daunting to some students, however, taking a systematic approach can ease fears in reluctant writers.
Jago discusses an approach created by Anne Lamott called Bird by Bird. This idea asks students to take one narrative writing assignment at a time instead of the traditional method. Their assignment is to learn how to brainstorm for ideas that a prompt is asking them to write. This is important because their essays will be stronger if they can visualize an outline or big picture as they write their essay. Also, I will demonstrate helpful strategies when addressing a prompt in order for them to answer any prompt completely.
Kelly Gallagher, in his book, Teaching Adolescent Writersencourages teachers to understand what the narrative writing assignment is asking. The class should have cleaned up and ready to leave and still have three to five minutes to reflect. They will receive credit or no credit for their responses.
